“Fall”-ing Headfirst into the New Year
2017 is just a few calendar flips away, but we’re not about to coast to the finish line of 2016.
Our Village Closet Open House was a huge success! Over 250 people attended the event held on October 1st. In under three hours, we distributed over $1,700 in maternity and baby supplies and we received $800 worth of donations. Some donations were quickly passed to new families before they even got inside. It was truly inspiring to watch as our Hilltown community came together to give and to receive. Thank you to our staff and volunteers who kept the children busy in the gym, helped load items into cars, and (because you probably didn’t see how hard they were working) sorted and put away the donations as they were coming in.
Didn’t make it to the event? Don’t worry — the Closet is open every Tuesday from 10:00am-2:00pm, and two Saturdays each month from 11:00-1:00pm. Our next Saturday hours are on November 19, December 3, and December 17.
We’re so popular!
Lisa was asked to present about our program to the Hampden County Perinatal Coalition at Baystate Medical Center on October 21st. She talked about the hundreds of families we helped support last year, as well as the increasing waiting list of families seeking support, especially in Hampden County. We also had a great turnout for our Volunteer Information Meeting with Mollie in Westhampton on November 1. We would like to give a special thanks to Pat Miller from the Hampshire CFCE and the Westhampton Women’s Fellowship for helping to organize the event. We were also featured in the Country Journal and in an amazing profile by Vida Leche Amore. In addition, we are excited to be featured in the November 21st edition of the Republican’s Voices of the Valley.
Would you like It Takes a Village to come talk to your staff or club about our programs? We would be thrilled to do so – just give us a call! Also, the more volunteers we can bring on board throughout the Hilltowns means the more postpartum families we can assist. If you are interested in getting involved, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
So cute it’s scary!
We loved seeing all the Trick or Treat pictures from our Village families, showing off the costumes they found at the Village Closet! These are just a few of our favorites.
Do you have a photo of your child in an outfit from the Village Closet? Send it to us and they could end up in next month’s newsletter.
Tuesday November 29 is Giving Tuesday. Celebrated annually on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season. The day connects individuals, communities and organizations around the world for one common purpose: to encourage giving to causes that matter to each of us.
Think about how much money is spent on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Last year, almost 134 million people took part in Black Friday festivities, and the average spending on Black Friday over the last 5 years was $400 per person. If even 10% of that money could have gone to charities, think about what a difference it could have made.
This is where you come in. Our services are free to all the families we serve and we want to keep it that way. A gift of $10 will cover snacks for a Mother’s Group; $30 will provide a printed Resource Kit for a family; $50 keeps the Village Closet open next week. Every little bit counts.
Simply to CLICK HERE to donate. You can even give today, and it will count towards our total for the 29th.
Want to help even more? Tell your friends and family why It Takes a Village is important to you by posting an “unSELFIE”, the unselfish-selfie! Click HERE to print out a sign, snap a photo, and share on social media telling the world why you are supporting us this Giving Tuesday.
Hilltown Charity Brings Holiday Cheer
Every year, It Takes a Village partners with another local organization, True Christmas, which delivers the magic of a “true Christmas” to local families who are struggling to provide the basic necessities to their children, let alone holiday gifts. You can help by donating new or gently used stuffed animals, toys or books to the Village Closet, as well as holiday decorations, wrapping paper or even gift certificates to a grocery store so families in need can prepare holiday dinners.
Do you have something to donate? Bring it to the Village Closet when we are open.
Do you know a family who is in need of a True Christmas? Contact True Christmas on Facebook.

Hilltown Playgroups and other Events
Every week there are free playgroups and family events all over the Hilltowns. Please see our public calendar and see what’s out there. Know of an event that is not listed? Let us know at email@example.com.
As always, we look to our community to help us bring these services to our Hilltown families. Families never pay for their home-visit volunteers, never pay for mothers group, and never pay for a single thing they receive from the Village Closet. Will you help us keep these services free?
Please consider donating today. Give today and it counts towards our Giving Tuesday total!
