Now that the snow has melted (well, almost) …
What’s been happening
We’ve been working so hard in the background, and it’s really paying off! First, a HUGE thank you to all the volunteers who helped with our Village Closet Spring Cleaning day. We got ALL the donations put away, and the place looked great.
Unfortunately, everyone has been SO GENEROUS with donations, that we are buried under baby clothes AGAIN! So if you have clothing donations for the Village Closet, please hang onto them for a month or two while we sort through and put away the donations we have. We are getting a lot of requests for cribs, so if you have one waiting for a new home, contact us and we can get it to a family that needs it. And as always, if you are free when the Village Closet is open, stop by and lend a hand — we especially need help on Tuesdays, and would love four or more volunteers to join us each week so we can stay on top of donations.
We are honored to add the Eileen Fisher organization and Stop & Shop to our list of supporters. Both have generously awarded us grants to help fund all our programs.
With all this amazing growth, we are actively recruiting more Home-Visit volunteers, especially in the Southern Hilltowns. Do you know someone who would make a great volunteer? Send them our way. And stay tuned for a “Meet the Village” night sometime next month, a casual meet-and-greet to introduce the public to all our programs.
It Takes a Village is so excited to be participating in the Nest Family Expo, the largest expo for new and growing families in Western Massachusetts. Along with national brands, Nest welcomes local businesses to teach families and attendees about unique products and services available in the Pioneer Valley. Nest 2017 features Ashlee Dean Wells of the 4th Trimester Bodies Project, who will be delivering the keynote presentation. Their Luxe Mommy Bliss tickets include a swag bag and photoshoot with the 4th Trimester Bodies Project, and their Luxe Baby Bump tickets include a swag bag and maternity photoshoot with Sarah Prall Photography.
Tickets are still available, so go to www.nestfamilyexpo.com.
The Village Closet runs on … Keurig
Sometimes people ask “How do you all do so much?!?!” We don’t pretend to take credit for everything, because behind the scenes is a team of volunteers that keep all the wheels turning … literally.
Travis approached us nearly two years ago, looking for a volunteer opportunity. Travis works for the Keurig Green Mountain Coffee company, and their “Community Action For Employees” program, better known as CAFE, entitles every full-time employee to 52 paid volunteer hours each year. Traffic at the Village Closet was starting to ramp up, and we had begun to do a lot of donation pickups and deliveries. “I don’t think I can *pick out* baby clothes,” he said nervously. “But do you mind driving all over creation?” we asked. “Not at all!” he said, and our first delivery driver came on board.
Now, about once a month, we load up Travis’s car and send him to Huntington, Colrain, Dalton, and Springfield, sometimes all in the same day. Our most at-risk families can get the items their babies need, and we can get those BIG donations to the Village Closet (and out of Lisa’s garage).
Mark your calendar for Tuesday, May 2 – this year’s Valley Gives Day, a 24-hour giving day bringing together non-profits from all over the Pioneer Valley. Keep an eye out (and get your voting fingers ready) for our submission to their video contest. We are hoping to raise enough to fund a brand new Mothers’ Group in the Southern Hilltowns, as well as keep our Ashfield group running through the summer. It is so important that mothers have a place to feel heard, and these groups are an essential part of the safety net for our Hilltown families. Continuing our group in the summer will allow for consistent support for families, and a new group in the Southern Hilltowns means that distance will no longer be a barrier to support.
Make sure to RSVP to the online event for all the updates.
The more we do, the more we need.
Please consider donating today — what about $20.17 to get 2017 off to a great start?!
